What is the purpose of wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the teeth furthest back in your mouth. Sometimes they are so far back that there is not enough room for them, and you can’t see them or feel them above the gum line. Wisdom teeth helped our ancestors eat hard, crunchy food that needed a lot of chewing. Traditionally your back teeth, or molars, are used for grinding, because they are stronger, larger, and have more surface for food. Over time our diet has changed, human jaws have shrunk, and wisdom teeth have become unnecessary for most people. Fun fact: other omnivores like bears and raccoons have molars too!
What is an impacted wisdom tooth?
An impacted wisdom tooth is one that doesn’t have enough room in the jaw to fully emerge from underneath the gum. Some impacted wisdom teeth can be horizontally situated in the jaw, which makes them more difficult to extract.
How do you know if your wisdom tooth is infected?
Because wisdom teeth often do not erupt above the gum line, or only erupt a small amount, food and bacteria can get stuck in and around the tooth. Over time, the decay associated with this trapped food and bacteria can cause an infection in the tooth. Signs of an infected wisdom tooth include pain in and around the tooth, pain in the jaw or side of the face, swelling and redness, difficulty opening your mouth, and sometimes even a fever. There are different types of wisdom teeth – teeth that are impacted, or angled in the jaw and not fully erupted, have much higher risk of infection. According to an article from 2016, over 80% of people between 20-29 have experienced symptoms of wisdom tooth infection.
Can wisdom tooth infection go away on its own?
The short answer is no. You can help the symptoms, but without antibiotics and tooth removal, the infection will often come back or worsen. Tooth infections should be taken seriously, because they can affect your overall health. Not only do they hurt, they can be dangerous! Just Pull It offers same day wisdom teeth extractions for $220, including panoramic x-ray and consultation with the doctor. We can help you get out of pain fast and go back to your normal day to day life, pain-free.
Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Wisdom teeth don’t always need to be removed. If the teeth are healthy, fully grown in, and able to be cleaned, or if the teeth are completely below the gumline and not causing any pain or discomfort, it is not necessary to remove them. However, there are many reasons why someone may choose to have their wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth can crowd your other teeth if there is not enough room, they can get infected because they are difficult to clean, or some impacted wisdom teeth can develop cysts underneath the gums. Infected wisdom teeth are extremely painful, and rather than wait until they have pain, some people want to remove them and prevent it altogether. Some persons entering the military may be required to get their wisdom teeth removed to prevent any interruptions in basic training. Our dentists at Just Pull It evaluate each patient to determine if the tooth needs to be removed. Call us today to schedule your same day extraction at 352-833-7855!
